Thinking that Mink has kidnapped her son again, Manit's wife tears off the paper charms and enters Mink's room, only to be stabbed to death by Mink.
The ritual is initially successful until Manit's wife apparently hears her son's crying coming from the room. Meanwhile, the possessed Mink has been locked in her room and the door sealed with paper charms Manit's wife and a few others keep watch outside until the ritual is complete. During the ritual, Noi volunteers her body to serve as a vessel to attract all the evil spirits possessing Mink, so that Santi can trap them in a container and bury it deep in the ground. Nim dies in her sleep one day before the ritual. In the days before the ritual, the possessed Mink creates havoc at home by briefly abducting Manit's son, boiling her family's dog alive and eating it, among other things. Nim, along with Santi and his students, prepares for an elaborate ritual to exorcise Mink on an auspicious day in the ruined factory. The failed transference ceremony had worsened things by making Mink's body a readily available vessel for possession by any spirit. Besides the bad karma her family had accumulated, Mink's mother had rejected a "blessing" when she refused to be Ba Yan's host. Mink's ancestors had been cursed because of the wicked deeds they had committed, hence the misfortunes that befell the men in her family. Nim brings Mink to seek help from a more powerful shaman, Santi, who tells them that Mink has been possessed by numerous evil spirits. While everyone else is searching for Mink, Nim returns to Ba Yan's shrine to pray and is horrified to see that the statue of the goddess had been decapitated.Ī month later, Mink is found in a delirious state in the ruins of her grandfather's factory. The ceremony fails and Mink's condition deteriorates Mink uses a camera to hit her mother before running away. Meanwhile, after Mink attempts suicide, Noi thinks that Ba Yan's spirit is punishing Mink for refusing to be her host, so she arranges for another shaman to conduct the transference ceremony without telling Nim.
She thinks that Mac's ghost is haunting Mink so she performs a ritual to appease him, but soon realises that it is not him. Nim later suspects that Mink's experiences have nothing to do with Ba Yan after she learns that Mink had committed incest with Mac, who had actually hanged himself. Nim initially notes that Mink's experiences are signs that Ba Yan has chosen her to be her next host, so she tries to persuade Noi to let her conduct a transference ceremony for Ba Yan's spirit to move from her body to Mink's. She is fired from her job after her boss discovers that she has been having sex with different men at her workplace. She also hears voices in her head, has nightmares, and experiences debilitating abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding. Mink starts behaving strangely and exhibiting multiple personalities, including those of an attention-seeking child, an old man, a drunkard, and a prostitute. Noi is left with her daughter, Mink, and they currently live with Manit, Nim and Noi's brother, and his family. Wiroj's son, Mac, died in a traffic accident. Wiroj's father killed himself after he was caught committing insurance fraud by setting his factory on fire in order to claim insurance. Nim attends the funeral of Noi's husband, Wiroj, who died of a heart attack, and reveals that misfortune had befallen the men in his family. Nim's sister, Noi, was initially selected to host Ba Yan's spirit, but Noi refused to accept her role and has converted to Christianity. Ī documentary crew travels to the Isan region of Thailand to interview a medium/ shaman, Nim, who claims to be possessed by the spirit of Ba Yan, a local goddess who has possessed women in Nim's family for generations.
It is the 6th highest-grossing Korean film of 2021. On the box office front as per Korean Film Council data, it is ranked 15th among all the films released in the year 2021 in South Korea, with gross of US$7.35 million and 831,126 admissions, as of 26 September 2021. The film was adjudged as the best feature film at 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and was awarded with the Bucheon Choice Award for the best film. It was selected as the Thai entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards but was not nominated. It was theatrically released in South Korea on 14 July 2021. The film was premiered at the 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival on 11 July 2021. It is a co-production of Thailand's GDH 559 and South Korea's Showbox.
